Microsoft Flight Simulator vs. X-Plane vs. Prepar3D — an Honest Comparison

Anyone looking to enter flight simulation today — or switch from one simulator to another — faces a fundamental decision: Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS), X-Plane, or Prepar3D? All three platforms have their raison d'etre, their loyal community, and specific strengths. This comparison examines the current landscape honestly — without marketing promises, but with the facts that matter for an informed decision.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 — the Visual Powerhouse

Since the groundbreaking reboot in 2020 and the comprehensive 2024 update, Microsoft and developer Asobo Studio have elevated flight simulation visually to a level that was unimaginable just a few years ago. At its core is the integration of Bing Maps photogrammetry data: the entire Earth is rendered in 3D based on satellite imagery and photogrammetric scans. Major cities like London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo appear with astonishingly detailed building structures generated automatically from the data.

Microsoft's Azure AI computes vegetation data, building types, and terrain features in the cloud. The result: even over rural regions, the view from the cockpit window feels realistic. Trees, fields, rivers, and roads follow their real-world courses. The atmospheric rendering — volumetric clouds, lighting moods at sunrise and sunset, rain effects — has set the industry standard since 2020.

MSFS 2024 introduced a career system with missions, challenges, and a structured progression path. For casual pilots and newcomers, this provides an engaging entry point. However, the community has noted that the 2024 launch was technically rough: performance issues, server outages, and missing features from the 2020 version caused frustration. Asobo has been patching steadily, but the reputation took a hit.

A significant advantage: MSFS is available via the Xbox Game Pass, which drastically lowers the entry barrier. Instead of a $70 to $130 purchase price, a subscription for under $15 per month suffices. There is also an Xbox version, bringing the simulator to consoles for the first time — albeit with compromises in controls and performance.

X-Plane 12 — the Best Flight Model in the Business

Laminar Research has pursued a radically different approach with X-Plane for over 25 years. While MSFS focuses on visual brilliance, X-Plane's emphasis lies on the physical accuracy of the flight model. The underlying Blade Element Theory calculates aerodynamic forces on every individual section of the wing, fuselage, and control surfaces in real time. The result is flight behavior that professional pilots regularly describe as the most realistic among desktop simulators.

X-Plane 12 has significantly improved its graphics over the predecessor: volumetric clouds, a new lighting system, better textures, and more realistic atmospheric effects close the gap to MSFS — without completely bridging it. Coming from MSFS, the world in X-Plane will still feel less detailed, especially regarding ground scenery and buildings.

X-Plane's great strength is its openness: the scenery format is well documented, open-source tools like WED (World Editor) are available, and sceneries are based on OSM data (OpenStreetMap), which the community continuously improves. Anyone wanting to create their own aircraft or sceneries finds the lowest barrier to entry in X-Plane. The community library on X-Plane.org offers thousands of free sceneries and aircraft.

A unique advantage: X-Plane runs natively on Linux and macOS. For users not bound to Windows, this is often the deciding factor. Additionally, several certified training simulators use X-Plane as their platform — a quality endorsement no other desktop simulation can claim.

Prepar3D v6 — the Professional Heir

Lockheed Martin acquired the source code of Microsoft ESP (Enterprise Simulation Platform) in 2009, which itself was based on the legendary FSX. From this, Prepar3D emerged — a simulator that deliberately positions itself as a professional training and simulation tool. Licensing distinguishes between Academic, Professional, and Professional Plus — there is officially no pure entertainment license, although the Academic license is affordable for many home users.

Prepar3D v6 features 64-bit support, improved graphics engine, and modernized weather rendering. Nevertheless, in direct visual comparison with MSFS or X-Plane 12, P3D now looks dated. Its strength lies elsewhere — in its exceptional stability, decades of compatibility with FSX/P3D add-ons, and widespread use in professional training environments.

For many long-time simmers, P3D was the top choice for years because PMDG, Majestic Software, FSLabs, and other premium add-on developers built their products primarily for this platform. But since 2020, most major developers have been migrating their products to MSFS — a trend that has accelerated further in 2024/25. New P3D-exclusive add-ons are increasingly rare.

Hardware Requirements Compared

Component MSFS 2024 X-Plane 12 Prepar3D v6
CPU (recommended) Intel i7-12700K / AMD Ryzen 7 7700X Intel i7-12700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X Intel i7-10700K / AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
GPU (recommended) RTX 4070 / RX 7800 XT RTX 3080 / RX 6800 XT RTX 3070 / RX 6700 XT
RAM 32 GB (64 GB ideal) 32 GB 32 GB
Storage NVMe SSD, 200+ GB NVMe SSD, 100+ GB SSD, 80+ GB
Internet Broadband mandatory (streaming) Not required Not required

MSFS 2024 is the most resource-hungry of the three simulators. Its cloud-based architecture requires a stable internet connection — without broadband, photogrammetry data is missing, and the world looks significantly less impressive. X-Plane and P3D function entirely offline, which is a relevant factor for users in areas with limited connectivity or unstable connections.

Add-on Ecosystem and Third-Party Developers

The add-on ecosystem is the deciding factor for many simmers. The landscape has shifted fundamentally since 2020:

MSFS now has the largest and most active ecosystem. PMDG offers the 737 and 777, Fenix the A320, iniBuilds the A310 and A350, FlyByWire the free A32NX. The in-house Marketplace and third-party shops like Orbx Direct, simMarket, and flightsim.to offer thousands of products. The official MSFS Marketplace takes 30% commission, which is why many developers distribute externally.

X-Plane has a mature, if smaller, ecosystem. The Toliss A321, Zibo 737 (free!), FlightFactor 767, and iniBuilds A310 are among the highlights. The X-Plane.org Store and the Threshold marketplace are the main destinations. The community maintains a strong open-source culture — many high-quality add-ons are available for free.

Prepar3D has the historically most extensive ecosystem but barely benefits from new development. Existing add-ons like PMDG (older versions), FSLabs A320, Majestic Q400, and Aerosoft sceneries continue to work, but developer focus has clearly shifted to MSFS.

Multiplayer and Online Networks

All three simulators are supported by the major online ATC networks VATSIM and IVAO. Connection is made via pilot clients like vPilot (MSFS/P3D), xPilot (X-Plane/MSFS), or IVAO's own client. In practice, the experience is comparable across all three platforms — controllers see only a radar blip, not the simulator's graphics.

MSFS additionally offers integrated multiplayer with direct display of other players in the world. Groups can fly together without signing up for an external network. This low barrier to entry has significantly democratized the multiplayer aspect of flight simulation.

Price Comparison

Criterion MSFS 2024 X-Plane 12 Prepar3D v6

Premium/Deluxe $130 (Aviator Edition) -- $220 (Professional)
Subscription model Game Pass (from $13/month) No No
Ongoing costs Internet for streaming None None

Community and Ecosystem Culture

The communities of the three simulators differ noticeably. The MSFS community is the largest and most diverse — from casual flyers exploring their hometown to hardcore simmers who work through every approach by the book. Platforms like flightsim.to (free add-ons), the official MSFS forum, and numerous YouTube channels provide a vibrant scene.

The X-Plane community tends to be more technically oriented. Professional pilots, aircraft developers, and technology enthusiasts are well-represented. Discussions on X-Plane.org more frequently revolve around aerodynamics, systems depth, and programming than screenshots.

The P3D community is the smallest and oldest. Many long-time simmers who have been involved since FSX remain loyal to P3D. Activity is declining, however, and new members are rare. Forums like AVSIM serve all three platforms, with MSFS content dominating.

Weather and Environment Rendering

MSFS uses real-time weather data from Meteoblue and presents it in volumetric cloud layers. Thunderstorms, fog, icing conditions, and wind shear are automatically generated from live METAR data. The result is atmospherically impressive — an approach in fog in MSFS is among the most immersive experiences in desktop simulation.

X-Plane 12 has completely overhauled its weather system. The new volumetric clouds and improved wind model approach reality but do not quite reach the visual level of MSFS. On the other hand, the physical behavior of weather — turbulence, wind shear, thermals — is considered by many pilots to be modeled more realistically.

Prepar3D relies on third-party weather engines like Active Sky (now also available for MSFS), REX, and HiFi Technologies. The base weather system without add-ons looks outdated — only with paid extensions does P3D reach an acceptable standard.

Stability and Maintenance

X-Plane is regarded as the most stable of the three simulators — crashes are rare, updates are carefully tested, and the platform runs reliably even with many add-ons. MSFS has an additional point of failure due to its cloud dependency: server issues can degrade the experience. P3D is stable in its base state but can show memory management issues under intensive add-on use.

Who Should Choose What?

The choice depends on personal priorities:

  • MSFS 2024 is the right choice for beginners, VFR pilots, scenery enthusiasts, and anyone seeking the most visually impressive experience. If you want to explore your home region, fly over vacation destinations, or simply enjoy the beauty of the Earth from above, this is where you get the best value.
  • X-Plane 12 is recommended for discerning pilots who value the most realistic flight model, for Linux/macOS users, for those with limited internet connectivity, and for anyone who wants to develop their own aircraft or sceneries.
  • Prepar3D v6 remains relevant for simmers with an existing FSX/P3D library, for professional training applications, and for users who depend on specific P3D-exclusive add-ons. For newcomers in 2025/26, P3D is no longer a recommended choice.
"The best simulator is the one you actually fly. Theoretical superiority means nothing if you reach for the other simulator in the evening because it's more fun." — A well-established community principle

The Multi-Sim Strategy

Many experienced simmers use more than one simulator today. MSFS for relaxed VFR flights over stunning landscapes, X-Plane for intensive IFR sessions with realistic flight behavior. This combination covers the entire spectrum of desktop flight simulation. The investment in both platforms — approximately $135 combined — is modest compared to the hardware and add-on costs that accrue regardless.

The days of having to commit to one simulator and vilify the other are over. Competition between the platforms drives innovation — and ultimately, all flight simulation enthusiasts benefit.

Outlook: Where Is This Heading?

MSFS will likely continue to grow through regular updates and Microsoft's resources. The integration of AI-driven improvements — such as automatic building recognition and rendering — is an ongoing process. X-Plane 12 receives regular updates from Laminar Research that further refine the flight model and gradually improve the visuals. Prepar3D continues to be supported by Lockheed Martin, but the focus increasingly shifts toward professional customers rather than the home-user market.

One thing is certain: flight simulation is in a golden age. The quality of the available simulators — whether MSFS, X-Plane, or Prepar3D — surpasses anything that was imaginable a decade ago. The choice between them is not between good and bad, but between different philosophies and priorities.
