Overview

The Gulfstream G280 is a super-midsize business jet that punches well above its weight class. Powered by two Honeywell HTF7250G engines producing 7,624 lbs of thrust each, the G280 offers a maximum range of 3,600 nautical miles at Mach 0.80 and a high-speed cruise of Mach 0.84, with a spacious stand-up cabin seating up to ten passengers.

What distinguishes the G280 from its super-midsize competitors is its exceptional combination of runway performance and range. The aircraft can operate from runways as short as 4,750 feet while still delivering transcontinental range, making it one of the most versatile jets in the super-midsize category.

2

History & Context

The G280 was developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) in partnership with Gulfstream, evolving from the Galaxy/G200 series. It first flew in December 2009 and received FAA type certification in 2012. The aircraft was designed to fill the gap between the midsize G150 and the large-cabin G450 in Gulfstream's product lineup.

Since entering service, the G280 has set numerous city-pair speed records and has become one of the most popular aircraft in the super-midsize segment. Its performance, reliability, and the Gulfstream brand reputation have made it a strong competitor against the Bombardier Challenger and Cessna Citation Longitude.

3

Development & Updates

The G280 features the PlaneView280 avionics suite based on the Rockwell Collins Pro Line Fusion platform, with four large LCD displays and a comprehensive cursor control device interface. The cockpit offers excellent situational awareness with synthetic vision, advanced weather radar, and CPDLC (Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications) capability.

The cabin offers a flat floor with a maximum height of 6 feet 3 inches and a width of 7 feet 2 inches, providing a comfortable environment for transcontinental flights. Standard configurations include eight to ten seats in a double-club arrangement, a full galley, and an enclosed lavatory. Gulfstream has continuously improved the interior with updated materials, lighting, and connectivity options.

4

Flight Characteristics

The G280 impresses with its strong takeoff performance and steep climb capability. The Honeywell HTF7250G engines provide ample thrust for operations from shorter runways than most super-midsize jets can manage, which opens up access to airports that competitors cannot reach. The aircraft climbs quickly to its FL450 ceiling where it cruises efficiently above most weather.

In flight, the G280 is stable and pleasant to fly, with well-balanced controls and predictable handling. The cabin is quiet at cruise, and the 9.1 psi pressurization differential maintains a low cabin altitude for passenger comfort on longer sectors. Pilots transitioning from smaller Gulfstream models find the G280 straightforward and rewarding to operate.

Use Cases & Target Group

The Gulfstream G280 appeals to operators who need super-midsize capability with exceptional flexibility:

  • Corporate flight departments requiring coast-to-coast and transatlantic range
  • Charter operators seeking a versatile super-midsize jet with short-field ability
  • Business travelers needing stand-up cabin comfort for transcontinental flights
  • Operators accessing airports with shorter runways than typical super-midsize jets require
  • Companies valuing the Gulfstream brand and service network
6

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Exceptional short-field performance unusual for a super-midsize jet
  • Range of 3,600 nm enables transcontinental and transatlantic missions
  • Stand-up cabin with flat floor and generous width for the class
  • Strong climb and cruise performance with Honeywell HTF7250G engines
  • Gulfstream brand support, service network, and resale value

Weaknesses

  • Cabin length is slightly shorter than some super-midsize competitors
  • Baggage compartment is smaller than some alternatives in the class
  • Two-pilot crew required, increasing operating costs for owner-operators
  • Higher acquisition cost than entry-level super-midsize jets
7

Summary & Conclusion

The Gulfstream G280 has earned its place as one of the leading super-midsize business jets by offering a rare combination of short-field performance, long range, and cabin comfort. Its ability to operate from airports that other jets in its class cannot reach gives operators genuine flexibility that translates to time savings and route options.

Backed by the Gulfstream brand and global service network, the G280 is a smart choice for operators who need super-midsize capability without the limitations that typically come with the category.
