Overview

The Diamond DA40 NG is a four-seat, low-wing, composite aircraft powered by a 180 HP Austro Engine AE300 turbodiesel, making it one of the most fuel-efficient four-seat aircraft in production. Built entirely from carbon-fiber composite materials at Diamond Aircraft's facilities, the DA40 NG combines exceptional visibility from its large bubble canopy with modern glass cockpit avionics and Jet-A fuel economy.

The NG (New Generation) designation highlights the jet-fuel engine, which burns approximately 7-8 GPH of widely available Jet-A fuel compared to the 9-10 GPH of Avgas consumed by comparable gasoline-powered aircraft. This efficiency, combined with the DA40's sleek aerodynamic design, makes it a favorite of cost-conscious flight schools and private owners worldwide.

2

History & Context

Diamond Aircraft, founded in Austria in 1981 by Hannes Dries, began as a manufacturer of motorgliders before expanding into the certified aircraft market. The DA40 Diamond Star first flew in 1997 and received certification in 2000. It was designed from the outset as a modern, composite training and touring aircraft.

The DA40 NG variant was introduced in 2009, replacing the Lycoming gasoline engine with the Austro Engine AE300 turbodiesel developed in-house by Diamond's engine subsidiary. This move to Jet-A fuel aligned with Diamond's philosophy of fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact, and gave the DA40 a significant operating cost advantage in many markets.

Development & Updates

The current DA40 NG features the Garmin G1000 NXi avionics suite as standard, with optional GFC 700 autopilot. The 180 HP Austro Engine AE300 is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder turbodiesel based on a Mercedes-Benz automotive engine block, adapted for aviation use with a FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system that automates engine management.

Diamond continues to refine the DA40 NG with improved interior options, enhanced FADEC software, and ongoing composite manufacturing improvements. The aircraft is produced at Diamond's facilities in Austria and Canada, with a growing global fleet in training and private operations.

Flight Characteristics

The DA40 NG is widely praised for its excellent handling qualities. The composite airframe is rigid and light, providing crisp control response and outstanding glide performance inherited from Diamond's motorglider heritage. The stick control (rather than a yoke) gives a direct, sporty feel that many pilots prefer.

The bubble canopy provides nearly unobstructed 360-degree visibility, which is exceptional for traffic awareness and sightseeing. In the pattern, the DA40 is clean and efficient, requiring careful speed management on approach due to its low drag profile. Pilots accustomed to draggier aircraft may need to plan approaches farther out.

The diesel engine runs smoothly at cruise with very low vibration, and the FADEC system means there is no mixture lever to manage. The pilot simply sets power and the engine optimizes itself, which reduces workload and eliminates the risk of improper leaning.

Use Cases & Target Group

The Diamond DA40 NG appeals to efficiency-minded operators who appreciate modern design:

  • Flight schools seeking low fuel costs with Jet-A diesel engine operation
  • Student pilots who value excellent visibility and modern ergonomics
  • Environmentally conscious pilots attracted to lower fuel consumption and emissions
  • Private owners wanting a sleek, composite touring aircraft
  • Operators in regions where Avgas availability is limited but Jet-A is readily available
6

Strengths & Weaknesses

Strengths

  • Exceptional fuel efficiency burning approximately 7-8 GPH of Jet-A diesel fuel
  • All-composite airframe provides excellent aerodynamics and corrosion resistance
  • Outstanding visibility from the large bubble canopy design
  • FADEC-controlled diesel engine eliminates mixture management workload
  • Garmin G1000 NXi glass cockpit with modern avionics as standard
  • Motorglider heritage gives excellent glide ratio and energy efficiency

Weaknesses

  • Austro Engine AE300 diesel has historically required attentive maintenance schedules
  • Useful load is modest, particularly with full fuel and four occupants
  • Cruise speed of approximately 132 knots is below some gasoline-powered competitors
  • Composite repair requires specialized knowledge and facilities
7

Summary & Conclusion

The Diamond DA40 NG represents a forward-thinking approach to general aviation, combining composite construction, diesel efficiency, and modern avionics in an aircraft that is both enjoyable and economical to fly. Its outstanding visibility, crisp handling, and low fuel costs make it particularly attractive for flight training operations and cost-conscious private owners.

For pilots and operators who prioritize fuel efficiency, modern design, and the availability of Jet-A fuel worldwide, the DA40 NG is one of the most compelling four-seat aircraft on the market today.
